Granite Fireplace FAQ

Granite fireplace and hearth in a luxurious home

Granite fireplaces can be a sign of taste, when done right. While brick is a nice, traditional classic, granite fireplaces are more likely to catch people’s eyes because they’re less common. Much like granite indicates a kitchen or bathroom of luxury, it can do the same for your fireplace.

In this article, you’ll learn a few of the things you should know before getting granite: how it reacts to heat, whether it can be used as a hearth, and more.

Can You Put Granite Around a Fireplace?

Yes, granite can be put around a fireplace. It handles heat and fire better than many other stones, for reasons we list in the next section. Beyond that, it isn’t easily scratched. This makes it preferable to one of the other common materials that fireplaces tend to be made of: slate.

Depending on the material your hearth is made out of, you may also need to get a stress crack membrane. This is designed to compensate for the fact that different materials expand at different rates in reaction to heat. If you choose two different materials for your fireplace hearth and face, and you don’t get a stress crack membrane, you’re more likely to see structural damage over time.

Will Fire Crack Granite?

Granite is a durable, heat-resistant stone. With some stones, you have to worry about serious damage, because they’re porous and retain water. When exposed to the heat of a fire, this water can evaporate, causing structural problems for the stone. You shouldn’t have this issue when using granite, which is unlikely to get cracks.

The only exception is listed above: you need to be careful if the hearth and face are made of different materials.

Can Granite Be Used as a Fireplace Hearth?

Yes. Because it’s so durable, granite can be used for the hearth or face of the fireplace. It isn’t the only stone that can be used for the hearth, but it is one of the most popular.

Can a Stone Fireplace Be Painted?

Granite is an excellent choice for your fireplace because it comes in such a wide variety of styles. There may be a situation, though, where you want to paint your fireplace.

Though it can be done, you want to make sure you’ve taken the necessary preparative steps. First, you need to make sure there aren’t any grease or soil remains on the chimney. Then, you need to rub away any gloss or dust.

You’ll also want to make sure you have a paint that is well-suited to stone. Some paints will fade too quickly, but latex paint is often a good choice for durability.
